Hello everyone,

I'm sorry I'm late in joining the blog... I admit I have a little bit of trouble navigating these techno-computer-multiple-menu sorts of things, even though I actually had a blog once (only made three entries. Alas). So please forgive me. I do look forward to looking at everyone's work and having lively discussions.

I tried to listen to Alexis's music on the link and I couldn't seem to download anything. (See above as to probable explanation.) Suggestions? 

I'm as concerned as everyone about Danielle's departure. I'm sure each of us is thinking (in my case, rather selfishly), Oh how I wish she could have held out until I graduated! Danielle IS the MFA-IA program in so many ways, so it's hard to envision how it will evolve from here. And yet, change and transition can be very good things, and with so many fine faculty on board (hi Rick!) I am sure all will work out and the program will be stronger than ever. Does anyone know if she is at least staying on in some sort of advisory (as opposed to advisor) capacity?

So in addition to my practicum, and working and going to my residency in Ireland I have volunteered to organize the portfolio critiques for the Carolinas chapter of SCBWI.

From Bonnie: "Thank you for your message regarding student concerns and questions surrounding Danielle’s departure as the MFAIA Program Director. My apologies for not getting back to you sooner; I’ve been busy with non-Goddard work this weekend.

I understand that Kabba’s announcement of Danielle’s departure may be a source of some anxiety for students, and I appreciate you coming to me to voice those concerns on behalf of students. I imagine that your scheduled conversation with Kabba this afternoon will help to answer some of your questions. As Kabba noted in his announcement, initial meetings are still underway and no decisions have yet been made with regard to leadership transition. This will be a considered process, and it is still very early as the news of Danielle’s departure is recent. So, what I can tell you is not particularly substantive, but may provide you with a sense of the current status. Kabba, Danielle, Pam Kinniburgh (of Human Resources) and I have spoken to discuss the immediate needs of the program. A meeting is currently being set up with Kabba, myself and the full MFAIA faculty. Due to pressing demands on Kabba’s time associated with this weekend’s Board of Directors m!

Composing Soundscapes

It sounds like Chelsea and Lauren are up to interesting things, congratulations to you both. I'm a G4 but decided to do my practicum this semester, and I'm glad I waited. For my Practicum, I'm composing soundscapes, and I have a few samples you can listen to on my blog. On my blog is also a link to my website where you can see some of my art jewelry and you can see my jewelry experiments and some of my old paintings on my Flickr photo album. I hope everyone has a satisfying and productive semester. By the way, this is Alexis.

Art in Schools

So it has been really exciting just how much support I have gotten from my state arts council and regional arts council in regards to being an artist in the schools. Not having any children of my own I was unaware of just how actively the state pursues having artists in the schools. It makes me proud to be a North Carolinian. The documents and guidelines they sent me are really helpful in planning an effective workshop and I would be happy to share them. The NC arts council has several different modes for artists to be directly involved in education. Those are: Teaching Artist, Artist-in-the-Schools, Artist-in-Residence, and arts educator. Each one of these has various levels of funding and involvement. Also my regional arts council has a program called Teaching Artist Boot Camp that I have been invited to for next June. WHy do I always get involved with things that have militant tones? Oh well. :)

Anywho... Things are going well. I reworked my manuscript and website and am really happy with both. If you feel like reading my little story or you want to see some character sketches check out: www.LjPatton.com.

I think this whole arts in education thing is incredibly perfect training. Once I am published I will need to promote my book with presentations at schools and this will help me be a more productive presenter.

Also I am attending the Society of Children's Books Writers and Illustrators fall conference the week before I go to my residency in Ireland. I have reserved a manuscript critique with editors/publishers so that should be super helpful feedback for my time in Ireland.

As one final note this is where I am going in Ireland.

The semester is off and running and I am involved in many eco-art projects and fashion events. I have great plans to attend workshops and classes to explore new glass garment making techniques.
